Starting a Lawn From Bare Sand

Hydroseed lawn installation in Orlando is the most affordable way to cover a large bare yard with grass that will root, as long as the grass is one that grows from seed here. We do new lawn installation on new-construction lots, yards stripped for a pool or septic job, and older lawns being started over. Seed, fiber mulch, starter fertilizer and tackifier go on in one pass, so the yard is covered and protected the same afternoon.

The grass decides everything

The first question is what lawn you want. St. Augustinegrass is the most widely used lawn grass in Florida, and UF/IFAS is clear that it can only be started from sod, plugs or sprigs, never from seed. If your neighborhood rules or your own taste call for St. Augustine, a hydroseed lawn is the wrong tool, and we will tell you so. Grasses that do establish from seed are bahiagrass, bermudagrass, centipedegrass and some zoysiagrass cultivars. Bahiagrass handles infertile sand, needs less water and fertilizer, and suits big lots; it is coarser and does not form a carpet-like lawn. Bermudagrass takes full sun and traffic. Centipedegrass is a lower-input option with very small seed, seeded at a quarter pound to a pound per 1,000 square feet.

Sod vs hydroseed on an Orlando lot

Sod gives instant cover and fewer weeds early, and UF recommends it where cover is needed right away. It is also the costly option, and in summer it lasts less than 48 hours on a pallet before it has to be laid. Hydroseeding costs far less per square foot, and fiber mulch keeps moisture at the seed in a way loose dry seed cannot. The trade is time: the lawn needs several weeks to fill in, and bahiagrass seed in particular germinates slowly. UF suggests scarified bahia seed where it is available, because it is treated to sprout faster.

Prep on flatwoods sand

Many Orlando-area lots sit on flatwoods sand that is low in organic matter, with a water table that can rise close to the surface in the wet months. Before seeding we fine grade so water runs toward a swale or drain instead of pooling, remove debris and clumps, and add topsoil only where the grade or the soil needs it. UF/IFAS recommends a soil test before planting, and suggests adding phosphorus before planting only if the test shows it is short. Nitrogen waits until there is uniform cover; new roots cannot use it yet and it can leach through sand.

Watering through the first weeks

Watering decides whether lawn seeding or any grass seeding succeeds. UF/IFAS calls poor watering the most common cause of seeding failure. The goal is a seedbed kept damp, never flooded, with short, frequent cycles for roughly the first two weeks, then longer and less frequent watering as roots go down. In the summer, afternoon storms do part of the job, but a dry week in May can still kill sprouted seed on sand. In the dry season, a working irrigation system is close to essential.

When to book

UF says spring and summer are the best months to seed warm-season grasses because growth is fastest. For an Orlando yard we like April through early June. Summer works with heavier mulch and drainage in place. Winter seed sits well but grows slowly and relies on sprinklers.

Smoothing and pitching the surface so rain moves off instead of pooling on young grass.

Topsoil where needed

Added on thin, rocky or scraped areas rather than spread over the whole lot by default.

Seed and mulch slurry

One uniform spray pass carrying the seed, wood fiber, starter fertilizer and tackifier together.

Edges and tight spots

Hydroseed Lawn Installation Questions

How much should I budget to hydroseed an average Orlando home lawn?

HomeGuide's national figures put each sq ft at $0.12 to $0.35, which works out to roughly $1,000 to $1,750 on a lawn of about 5,000 square feet, with a $300 to $500 minimum at most companies. Prep is what moves the number most: grading, topsoil and debris removal. We measure first and list each item separately.

Can you hydroseed St. Augustine grass?

No. St. Augustinegrass is grown only from sod, plugs or sprigs. If that is the lawn you want, sod is the way to go. If you are open to bahiagrass, bermudagrass or centipedegrass, seed works well.

Do I still need sprinklers if it rains every afternoon in summer?

Usually yes. Storms are not daily all season, and a few dry, hot days can kill seedlings on fast-draining sand. A working irrigation system or a reliable hose setup makes the difference.

When should a new seeded lawn get fertilizer?

UF/IFAS advises waiting until seeded grass has uniform cover before applying nitrogen, since young roots cannot take it up and it can leach. Follow the Florida urban turf fertilizer rule and any local summer restrictions.

Why is my bahiagrass taking so long to come up?

Bahiagrass seed germinates slowly compared with other lawn grasses. Steady moisture and scarified seed help. Give it a few weeks before judging the stand.
