Turning Farm Ground Into Lawn by Lake Monroe

Hydroseeding in Sanford often starts on ground that was farmed for a century. The city sits on the south shore of Lake Monroe at the head of navigation on the St. Johns River. It was once the world's largest shipper of oranges, and after the freeze of 1894 and 1895 farmers switched to vegetables. Celery went in by 1896, and Sanford became the Celery City.

What old farm soil means for seeding

Former vegetable and grove fields can be compacted, uneven or full of old ditches and pipe. Some areas are low and hold water. Before lawn seeding we loosen compacted ground, fill and level old furrows, and fine grade the lot so rain drains off rather than pooling. Topsoil goes only where the existing soil is too thin.

Close to big water

About 3.54 of Sanford's 26.5 square miles is water, much of it Lake Monroe. Lots near the lakefront and along drainage ditches send runoff straight to the St. Johns system. We set silt fence on the low side of bare sites, protect inlets near the street and cover graded soil in the same visit.

A clear dry season

Sanford's dry season runs from October to May and the wet season from June to September. Seeding in the dry months keeps material in place but needs steady irrigation. Seeding at the start of the wet season gives fast growth, as long as the mulch is down before the afternoon storms start.

Commercial and airport-area work

Orlando Sanford International Airport sits in the middle of town, and the area around it has warehouses, offices and new roads. Those jobs need commercial hydroseeding on large open areas, pond banks and road shoulders, plus silt fence installation and maintenance while sites are bare.

Sanford Questions

Our new home is on old farmland. Why is the yard so uneven?

Old furrows, ditches and settling fill are common on former celery and grove fields. We grade those out before seeding.

When should I seed a Sanford lawn?

Late spring into early summer gives warmth and rain. Dry-season seeding works if you can water reliably.

Do you install silt fence for commercial sites near the airport?

Yes, along with inlet protection, and we can check and repair it after heavy storms.

My lot is close to Lake Monroe and stays soggy. Can it be seeded?

Usually, after we improve the grade so water drains away. Very low spots may need a swale or a small drainage trench first.
