Keeping Sediment Out of the Econ

Hydroseeding in Oviedo sits between two kinds of water. The Econlockhatchee River runs through the east side of the city and the Little Econlockhatchee through the south, and the original 1875 settlement was about a mile southeast of Lake Jesup. Oviedo was rural and agricultural through the 1940s, but growth tied to the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Research Park has filled it with new neighborhoods.

Rivers on two sides

Lots that drain toward the Econ or Little Econ need sediment kept on site. On construction jobs we set silt fence along the low side before grading, protect inlets, and seed as soon as final grade is set. On homes near the river corridors, even a small regrade deserves a wattle on the downhill edge.

Lake Jesup lessons

Lake Jesup, the largest lake in Seminole County, spent decades taking in wastewater and stormwater runoff. That built up muck more than 9 feet deep in places on a lake that averages about 6 feet. Restoration since the 1990s has included removing a 2-mile berm to reconnect floodplain. Every bare yard that drains north adds a little to that load, which is why we cover soil fast.

Old farmland soils

Henry Foster's railroad and steamboat line helped turn Oviedo's citrus and celery into big business, and agriculture led the economy into the 1940s. Former fields can be compacted, uneven and low. We loosen, fine grade and add topsoil where needed before any lawn seeding.

Road widening and new town center

State Road 434 through downtown has been widened, and in 2015 the city opened Oviedo on the Park, a mixed-use center built around Center Lake Park and its man-made lake. Road and redevelopment work leaves shoulders, medians and nearby yards that need regrading and seed.

Oviedo River and Lake Facts

  • Two rivers. The Econlockhatchee River runs through the east of the city and the Little Econlockhatchee through the south.
  • Lake Jesup muck. Decades of runoff left muck more than 9.5 feet deep in parts of Lake Jesup, which averages only about 6 feet deep.
  • Farm history. Citrus and celery made agriculture Oviedo's primary industry all the way through the 1940s.
  • New town center. Oviedo on the Park opened in 2015 around Center Lake Park and its man-made lake.

Oviedo Questions

We back up to the Little Econ. Do we need silt fence for a new lawn?

For a regraded yard that slopes toward the river, a short silt fence or wattle on the low edge is cheap insurance until grass fills in.

The road widening left our front yard torn up. Can you fix it?

Yes. We regrade the disturbed strip, add topsoil and seed it to match the rest of the lawn.

Why does fertilizer matter so much near Lake Jesup?

Runoff and nutrients are what damaged the lake. We use a starter rate that fits the soil rather than a heavy feed.

Is Oviedo soil good for grass?

It varies. Old farm fields can be compacted or uneven, so we check and prep before seeding.
