From Tangelo Groves to New Yards
Hydroseeding in Minneola often means turning old citrus land into lawn. The city gave its name to the Minneola tangelo, and citrus groves were planted here from about 1880. Today that grove land is turning into neighborhoods, and new owners want grass. Hydroseed is a practical way to cover a big yard in one visit.
A name about water
The city says Minneola comes from the Dakota words for "much water." The first settler built on the north shore of Plum Lake after the Civil War, and Cow House Lake was renamed Lake Minneola when the town was surveyed. Lots near those shores drain toward them, so we keep slurry off the water's edge and use a wattle or short silt fence where a bare yard slopes to the lake.
Prepping old grove ground
Former grove lots can hold old stumps, roots and buried irrigation pipe. Grove sand is often lean and low in organic matter. We clear debris, loosen the surface, add topsoil where the sand will not hold water and fine grade before seeding.
New lawns and overseeding
In new subdivisions we see builder lawns that thinned out in the first summer, side yards that never filled in, and bare strips along fences. We overseed thin turf and fully seed the bare spots. Mixing approaches on one property is common and keeps cost down.
Steady water share
About 5 percent of Minneola's 11.47 square miles is water. That means ponds, lakefronts and drainage swales show up on many jobs. Swales and pond banks get extra mulch or erosion control blankets because they carry water every storm.

Minneola Questions
Can you hydroseed a lot that used to be an orange grove?
Yes. We pull stumps and old pipe near the surface, loosen the soil and add topsoil where the sand is too lean.
My builder lawn died out in spots. Do I need a whole new lawn?
Usually not. We overseed the thin areas and fully seed the bare ones.
We live on Lake Minneola. Is there anything special about seeding a lakefront yard?
We stop the spray short of the water and add a wattle or silt fence if the yard slopes toward the lake while it is bare.
Can you seed the drainage swale behind our house?
Yes. Swales get extra mulch or a blanket because water runs through them during every storm.
