Hydroseeding in Longwood, FL

A once one-square-mile town that grew into a residential city, with spring-fed water on its western edge.

Older Lots and Spring-Fed Water

Hydroseeding in Longwood is mainly lawn renovation on established lots. In 1959 the city had just over 1,000 residents in a boundary about one mile square. Military bases, the space program and Walt Disney World brought waves of new families through the 1960s and 1970s, and Longwood became mainly a residential community. Many yards from that era are ready for a new start.

A grass airstrip turned subdivision

Longwood once had its own airport, a single grass runway on the west side north of State Road 434. It closed and became The Woodlands subdivision in the late 1960s. Lawns that old have often lost their topsoil and filled with weeds. We remove the worn layer, add topsoil where needed, regrade around walks and drives, and hydroseed fresh.

Springs on the west side

In Longwood, several second- and third-magnitude springs, including Sanlando Springs, feed the Little Wekiva River before it reaches the Wekiva River Buffer Conservation Area. The Little Wekiva is the only tributary of the Wekiva that drains urban areas north and west of Orlando, and agencies have worked for years to protect it. Yards that drain west should be covered fast, with a wattle or short silt fence on the low edge during work.

Small water, many ponds

About 5 percent of Longwood's 5.6 square miles is water. Retention ponds and small lakes appear throughout the subdivisions. Pond banks wear faster than lawns and benefit from erosion control blankets or extra mulch when reseeded.

Tight lots, mature trees

Older neighborhoods mean big oaks, fences and narrow side yards. Hydroseed hose reaches the back from the driveway, and we keep grading light around root zones.

Longwood Questions

Our lawn is decades old and mostly weeds. Is hydroseed a good fix?

Yes. We strip the worn layer, add topsoil where it has thinned and seed a fresh lawn for less than sod.

We drain toward the Little Wekiva. What extra steps do you take?

We place a wattle or short silt fence on the low edge, keep slurry away from drains and cover soil the same day.

Can you work around the big oaks in our yard?

Yes. We keep grading shallow near trunks and choose seed suited to the shade.

How long before we can use a renovated lawn?

Light use in about six to eight weeks in warm weather with good watering. Heavy play waits a bit longer.
