Hydroseeding in Winter Park, FL

An 1880s planned town of lakes and mature yards, where most of our work is renewing lawns rather than starting from dirt.

  • No-charge walk-through of the lot before we quote
  • Seed matched to Florida warm-season grasses, not northern blends
  • Seed, mulch, prep and erosion items listed on separate quote lines

Renewing Lawns in an Old Lake Town

Hydroseeding in Winter Park is mostly about bringing tired, established yards back rather than seeding brand-new lots. Loring Chase and Oliver Chapman assembled the land in 1881 because of its group of lakes, then spent four years laying out a gridded town that still shapes the place. Lawns here are often decades old, shaded in spots and bordered by water, which changes how we prep and spray.

Renovation instead of a fresh start

On an old lawn we usually strip dead or weedy patches, loosen the top layer, correct low spots with a thin lift of topsoil and then hydroseed. Overseeding thin areas can work where enough turf is still alive. A full lawn renovation makes more sense when the old grass is mostly gone.

Lakefront banks

Many Winter Park lots slope down to Lake Virginia, Lake Mizell, Lake Berry or Lake Osceola. Bare soil on those banks sheds sediment straight into the water. On short, gentle banks a heavier hydromulch rate is usually enough. On steeper or longer slopes we pin straw erosion control blankets first and seed into them.

Settling and sinkholes

Winter Park knows sinkholes better than most towns. In May 1981 a hole near Denning Drive and Fairbanks Avenue grew to about 320 feet wide and 90 feet deep, swallowing a house, part of the city pool and several cars. A 1987 drop in the lake that formed there caused erosion on its southern rim. Most yard dips are just old roots or poor fill, but a fresh depression should be checked before we grade or seed it.

Working around mature yards

Old lots come with sprinkler lines, tree roots, fences and tight side yards. Hydroseed hose can reach well into a back yard from the street, so we rarely need to drive equipment across the lawn. We mark sprinkler heads and keep grading light around big roots.

Winter Park Land and Lake Facts

  • Planned around lakes. Chase and Chapman bought the tract in 1881 because of the group of lakes east of the rail line, then laid out a gridded town.
  • 1981 sinkhole. The Winter Park Sinkhole grew to about 320 feet wide and 90 feet deep, taking a home, part of a pool and sections of Denning Drive.
  • Rim erosion. In 1987 the bottom of the sinkhole lake suddenly dropped about 20 feet, causing erosion along its southern rim.
  • Early warning. In 1972 a local agricultural agent warned that overdevelopment and heavy groundwater use put west Winter Park at sinkhole risk.

Winter Park Questions

Can you hydroseed over my old lawn without tearing it all out?

If a good share of the turf is still alive, overseeding is an option. If it is mostly weeds or bare sand, we remove the dead layer, loosen the soil and seed fresh.

How do you keep seed and mulch out of the lake?

We set a short silt fence or wattle at the bottom of the bank when needed, use tackifier in the slurry and blanket steeper slopes.

There is a small dip forming in my yard. Should you just fill it?

Not without knowing why it formed. In a town with Winter Park's sinkhole history, have a new depression checked before we regrade it.

Can the hose reach my back yard if there is no gate access?

Usually yes. The hose runs from the truck at the street, so we often seed back yards without bringing equipment through the gate.

Will hydroseed grow under my big shade trees?

Deep shade limits any lawn. We match the seed to the light you have and can leave the darkest spots for mulch or groundcover.
