Seeding Between the Springs and Lake Apopka
Hydroseeding in Apopka means working in a city with two famous waters on either side. Wekiwa Springs, the source of the Wekiva River, sits inside a state park in Apopka, and Lake Apopka, Florida's fourth-largest lake, lies about 15 miles northwest of Orlando near the city. Apopka is also known as the Indoor Foliage Capital of the World for its greenhouse nurseries. Between the nurseries, older groves and new subdivisions along the expressway, the work here is a mix of lawns, builder lots and commercial pads.
Runoff and nutrients
Lake Apopka was once called Florida's most polluted large lake, largely from phosphorus washing off farms on its north shore. In 2002 the St. Johns River Water Management District adopted a rule limiting phosphorus discharge from new construction in the lake's watershed. For hydroseeding that means two things: keep sediment on site with silt fence and inlet protection, and use a starter fertilizer that fits the site rather than a heavy general blend.
Spring-fed water to the north
Wekiwa Springs puts out about 66.5 cubic feet of water per second, and Rock Springs in Kelly Park feeds Rock Springs Run nearby. Lots that drain toward these runs deserve the same care. We cover bare soil quickly, keep slurry off pavement and storm drains, and stage seeding so large areas are not left bare through a storm week.
Growth along the expressway
Apopka is a fast-growing city. The John Land Apopka Expressway opened in 2009 and was later extended as the Wekiva Parkway, and the AdventHealth Apopka hospital opened in 2017 to serve the larger population. New roads and rooftops mean regraded lots, retention ponds and road shoulders that all need stabilizing before final inspections.
Former nursery and grove ground
Old nursery and grove land can be compacted from years of traffic or heavy with leftover pots, plastic and roots. We clear debris, rip or loosen the surface, and add topsoil where the sand is too lean to hold moisture before we spray.

Apopka Water and Land Facts
- Wekiwa Springs. The headwater of the Wekiva River is Wekiwa Springs, a second-magnitude spring in Wekiwa Springs State Park in Apopka.
- Phosphorus rule. Since 2002 a district rule limits phosphorus discharged into Lake Apopka or its tributaries from new construction in the watershed.
- Foliage nurseries. Apopka is called the Indoor Foliage Capital of the World because of its many greenhouse nurseries.
- Expressway growth. Toll 414 opened in 2009 and its Wekiva Parkway extension added a junction at US 441 and Plymouth Sorrento Road.

Apopka Questions
Do you use fertilizer in the hydroseed mix near Lake Apopka?
We use a starter rate that fits the soil and the site, not a heavy blanket feed. In a watershed with phosphorus limits, less runoff is the goal.
Can you seed an old nursery property for a new lawn?
Yes. We clear leftover pots, fabric and debris, loosen compacted ground and add topsoil where needed before spraying.
My builder needs silt fence before the lot is seeded. Can you do both?
Yes. The fence and inlet protection go in before construction starts, and the hydroseed goes down after final grade is set.
How soon should a cleared lot near the Wekiva be covered?
As soon as grading is done. Hydromulch goes on in the same visit as the seed, so the soil is covered that day.
