Once called the High Sand Hills

Hydroseeding in Clermont, FL

Real hills, deep sand and a chain of lakes that has felt the runoff from twenty years of fast growth.

Holding Sand on Clermont's Hills

Hydroseeding in Clermont deals with something rare in Florida: hills. The city sits on the northern part of the Lake Wales Ridge, with rolling terrain that early American mapmakers called the High Sand Hills. Deep, porous ridge sand drains fast and moves easily when it is bare, so a newly graded slope can lose its surface in one hard storm.

Slope stabilization comes first

On Clermont's slopes we treat erosion control as part of every seeding job. Gentle yard grades get a heavier hydromulch rate with tackifier. Steeper banks, cuts along driveways and long back-yard slopes get either a bonded fiber matrix or straw erosion control blankets pinned to the ground. At the bottom, silt fence or wattles catch what still moves.

Runoff and the chain of lakes

The Clermont chain of lakes lies right beside the city, and Lake Apopka is nearby. Clermont's population grew more than 250 percent from 2000 to 2020, and increased runoff from residential development has hurt the city's lakes. Every bare lot that drains downhill adds to that. Covering soil fast and keeping silt fence in good shape protects the water.

Sand that will not hold water

Ridge sand is great for drainage and hard on young grass. Hydromulch helps keep moisture near the seed, and a few inches of topsoil on the leanest spots makes a big difference. Irrigation needs to be short and frequent at first, then deeper as roots grow.

Grove land gone to housing

Citrus groves once covered much of the area, the reason for the 1956 Citrus Tower. Freezes and suburban growth shrank the groves late in the 20th century, and real estate took over. Former grove lots can hide roots and old irrigation lines, so we check before fine grading.

Clermont Ridge and Lake Facts

  • Ridge location. Clermont lies on the northern part of the Lake Wales Ridge, with rolling hills unusual for the Florida peninsula.
  • High Sand Hills. Early American maps by Washington Hood named the region the High Sand Hills.
  • Growth and runoff. Population grew over 250 percent from 2000 to 2020, and development runoff has hurt the city's lakes.
  • Porous sand. Lake Wales Ridge soils are very deep, porous sands with a hot, dry, fast-draining surface.

Clermont Questions

Our back yard is a steep slope down to a lake. What holds best?

Either straw blankets or a bonded fiber matrix over the seed, plus a wattle or silt fence along the toe of the slope. Hydroseed alone is fine for gentle grades only.

Why does the sand on my hill keep washing out after rain?

Ridge sand has little to bind it once vegetation is gone. It needs cover right away, and sometimes a small grade change to slow the water.

Can you seed a hillside lot for a builder before closing?

Yes. We seed at final grade and use blankets on the steep parts so the lot stays stable through inspections.

How much topsoil do I need on Clermont sand?

It depends on the spot. We usually add a thin layer where the sand is leanest rather than covering the whole yard.
