Frequently Asked Questions
Hydroseeding Questions
How much does it cost to have someone hydroseed a lawn around Orlando?
For residential hydroseeding, HomeGuide puts the national range for each sq ft at $0.12 to $0.35 and Angi's at $0.07 to $0.26, and HomeGuide notes most companies have a $300 to $500 minimum. Grading, topsoil, steep banks and blankets add to that. We measure the area and quote the prep, seed and mulch on separate lines.
Is there a downside to hydroseeding?
Yes. It is not instant: you wait several weeks for full cover, and the seedbed needs steady watering until it roots. It also cannot plant St. Augustinegrass, Florida's most common lawn grass, which only goes in as sod, plugs or sprigs. On a sand lot without irrigation in the dry season, sod or waiting for the rains may make more sense.
Which month is the best to hydroseed a lawn in Central Florida?
For most Orlando yards, April through early June. Warm-season grasses grow fastest in spring and summer, and starting before the peak of the June to September storms gives roots a head start. Summer jobs are fine with heavier mulch and good drainage; winter jobs need reliable irrigation.
Can I hydroseed over my existing lawn?
Over a thin bahiagrass, bermudagrass or centipedegrass lawn, yes, after mowing low and loosening the bare spots so seed reaches soil. Over St. Augustinegrass it does little, because that grass does not come from seed. Patches in a St. Augustine lawn are better filled with sod or plugs.
Which grass seed holds up best on sandy Orlando lots?
Bahiagrass is the usual pick for sand, big lots and areas without sprinklers because it roots deep and tolerates low fertility. Argentine is the cultivar UF prefers for lawns; Pensacola is common on roadsides. Bermudagrass suits sunny, high-traffic areas, and centipedegrass fits lower-maintenance yards.
How fast will a hydroseeded yard green up here?
In warm months, extension and cost-guide sources put first sprouts at about 5 to 7 days, with most lawns up within 7 to 14 days. Bahiagrass is slower to germinate than the others. HomeGuide puts the first mowing at 4 to 6 weeks after seeding.
Will an afternoon thunderstorm wash out new hydroseed?
Fiber mulch with tackifier is made to stick through normal rain, which is the main reason to use it instead of dry seed. What causes washouts is concentrated water running across bare ground, so we fix the grade and use blankets in channels and on steep banks.
Hydroseed Lawn Installation Questions
How much should I budget to hydroseed an average Orlando home lawn?
HomeGuide's national figures put each sq ft at $0.12 to $0.35, which works out to roughly $1,000 to $1,750 on a lawn of about 5,000 square feet, with a $300 to $500 minimum at most companies. Prep is what moves the number most: grading, topsoil and debris removal. We measure first and list each item separately.
Can you hydroseed St. Augustine grass?
No. St. Augustinegrass is grown only from sod, plugs or sprigs. If that is the lawn you want, sod is the way to go. If you are open to bahiagrass, bermudagrass or centipedegrass, seed works well.
Do I still need sprinklers if it rains every afternoon in summer?
Usually yes. Storms are not daily all season, and a few dry, hot days can kill seedlings on fast-draining sand. A working irrigation system or a reliable hose setup makes the difference.
When should a new seeded lawn get fertilizer?
UF/IFAS advises waiting until seeded grass has uniform cover before applying nitrogen, since young roots cannot take it up and it can leach. Follow the Florida urban turf fertilizer rule and any local summer restrictions.
Why is my bahiagrass taking so long to come up?
Bahiagrass seed germinates slowly compared with other lawn grasses. Steady moisture and scarified seed help. Give it a few weeks before judging the stand.
Builder & Site Hydroseeding Questions
What do hydroseeding companies charge per acre?
Fixr's consumer range is roughly $2,000 to $4,000 an acre and LawnStarter's is $2,136 to $4,897, and two bidders on a 2023 Arkansas city park job priced it at $2,595 and $3,325 an acre. Commercial bids depend heavily on access, water and mulch rate.
When can I file the Notice of Termination for my construction permit?
Under Florida DEP's Construction Generic Permit, the Notice of Termination is due within 14 calendar days after the site achieves final stabilization, or after discharges are covered by another permit. Your SWPPP defines what stabilization means for your site.
Can you seed in phases as homes are finished?
Yes. Many builders call us back lot by lot or section by section, and we reseed areas disturbed by late utility or landscape work.
What grass do you use on commercial ground with no irrigation?
Bahiagrass is the usual choice for unirrigated sandy sites because it roots deep and tolerates low fertility. If your plans specify a seed mix, we follow the specification.
Do you bring your own water?
We fill the tank from an approved source, such as a hydrant meter or a site connection where the project allows it. We sort that out during the site check.
Pond Bank & Slope Erosion Control Questions
Why does the bank of our retention pond keep washing out?
Usually because runoff from a roof, road or yard is concentrating at one point on the slope and there are not enough roots to hold the sand. Fixing the inflow point and covering the bank with blanket and grass solves most cases.
Is hydromulch enough, or do I need erosion control blankets?
On flat or gently sloped ground, hydromulch with tackifier is usually enough. Where water runs in a channel, or the slope is steep or long, blankets hold much better until grass is established.
What is bonded fiber matrix and when is it worth it?
It is a sprayed mulch with bonding agents that forms a tougher, continuous cover than standard hydromulch. It is worth it on steeper slopes where blankets are hard to install or where you want a sprayed finish.
Do blankets have to be removed later?
No. Straw and coir rot away on their own while the turf fills in and takes over holding the soil. On mowed areas, we pick a blanket type that will not tangle in a mower once the grass is up.
Silt Fence & Inlet Protection Questions
Does a one-lot home build in Orlando fall under the state stormwater permit?
It can. Florida DEP's Construction Generic Permit reaches sites under an acre when they belong to a bigger planned subdivision or development and discharge to surface waters or a storm sewer system. Builders in subdivisions should check with their permit holder.
What do silt fence contractors check after a storm?
Sediment built up against the fence, sections knocked down or undercut, stakes pulled loose, and inlet protection clogged or bypassed. Each is cleaned out or repaired so the next storm is handled.
Why is my silt fence buried at the bottom?
So water goes through the fabric, not under it. The trenched and backfilled toe is what makes silt fence work, especially in loose sand.
When can the silt fence come down?
Once the disturbed ground behind it is stabilized, usually with established vegetation, and your permit or inspector agrees. We can seed the fence line when we remove it.
Fine Grading & Topsoil Prep Questions
Why does water sit in my yard for days after a storm?
Usually the grade is too flat or slightly backward toward the house or a low corner, and in wet months the water table can sit close to the surface. Regrading toward a swale or inlet is the common fix.
Do I need topsoil before hydroseeding?
Not always. A soil test and a look at the ground decide it. Thin, scraped or debris-filled areas benefit; decent native soil may only need loosening and fine grading.
Can you dig a trench to carry downspout water away?
Yes, for small residential drainage runs. Larger changes to how a lot drains into public systems may need a permit or engineer, and we will tell you if that applies.
Is yard grading worth doing before sod too?
Yes. Sod laid on a bad grade drowns in the same low spots seed does. The prep is the same either way.
Lawn Repair & Reseeding Questions
Can my brown bahiagrass lawn come back without reseeding?
Often, yes. Bahiagrass goes dormant and turns brown in long droughts and greens up again when rain or irrigation returns. Check for green at the base of the plants before you reseed.
How do I fix bare spots in a St. Augustine lawn?
With sod pieces or plugs, since St. Augustinegrass is not grown from seed. Find the cause first; chinch bugs are a common one along sunny walks and drives.
Is winter ryegrass overseeding worth it in Orlando?
Only for short-term color. UF/IFAS notes cool-season grasses die quickly in Florida's warm climate, so it does not repair a thin lawn.
What does lawn overseeding cost per square foot?
Lawn Love's overseeding range is $0.07 to $0.23 a square foot, and Fixr puts overseeding with aeration at $0.08 to $0.25. Repair jobs with regrading are quoted on site.
