Grass on Slopes Most of Florida Never Sees
Hydroseeding in Winter Garden is different from the flat lots east of Orlando because the ground actually moves. The city has the highest point in Orange County, about 222 feet near the southwest corner by the Lake County line, and drops to about 64 feet along Lake Apopka. That gentle to moderately sloping terrain is easy to like and easy to wash out if a new yard is left bare.
Slope stabilization
On rolling lots, water picks up speed and carries sand downhill. For yard slopes we raise the hydromulch rate and add tackifier. On steeper cuts, pond banks and long runs, we roll out erosion control blankets or use a bonded fiber matrix so the surface holds until roots take over. A short silt fence at the toe keeps whatever does move off the street.
From groves to subdivisions
Citrus defined Winter Garden through much of the 20th century. Back-to-back freezes in the 1980s cut into the groves, and as the metro grew it became more profitable to sell grove land to developers. Much of today's housing sits on that ground. Old grove soil can be lean sand with buried roots and irrigation pipe, so we check for debris and add topsoil where the sand will not hold water.
Draining toward Lake Apopka
The city's north edge is Lake Apopka, which suffered for decades from nutrient-rich runoff from farms. Lots on the north side drain toward that water, so sediment control is not a formality here. We set silt fence before grading starts on bigger jobs and keep slurry off pavement.
Steady growth
Since 2000 Winter Garden has kept growing through the recession and after, and the master-planned Horizon West area borders the city to the south. That means builder closeouts, common areas and retention ponds that need grass before inspections.

Winter Garden Terrain Facts

- Low edge. The lowest elevation in the city is about 64 feet, near Lake Apopka on its northern border.
- Sloping terrain. The terrain is described as gentle to moderately sloping, unlike the flat lowlands of much of Central Florida.
- Grove to housing. After 1980s freezes, selling grove land to developers became more profitable than replanting citrus.

Winter Garden Questions
My new yard has a real slope. Is hydroseed enough by itself?
On gentle grades, a heavier hydromulch with tackifier usually holds. On steeper or longer slopes we add erosion control blankets or bonded fiber matrix.
Is old citrus grove soil good for a lawn?
It is usually sandy and low in organic matter. We clear buried roots and pipe and add topsoil where the sand will not hold moisture.
Water runs off my lot onto the neighbor's. Can grading fix that?
Often. We reshape the grade to send water to a swale or the street, then seed so the new surface does not wash.
Do you seed retention pond banks in new Winter Garden neighborhoods?
Yes. Pond banks get blankets or heavy hydromulch, since they take runoff from every storm.
